2007-11-00: In 11-2007 nadere info, via Marien Lindeborn, van Luis Miguel Correia:

I want to thank you very much for the information of the EVERHARD kindly sent via Bill Schell. I still remember well seeing that small elegant coaster in LISBON IN 1977. I have been able to obtain extra informations about her history and so I'm pleased to send it to you. I was able to confirm that she was sold to Panamian interests in 1977 before her loss, although I believe all her sales after the 1954 purchase by FRASIL were within the frame of the same Silva family. When FRASIL went bankrupt in 1967 they formed COMPONAVE, and even the later concern based in Gibraltar was probably an office to have the company registered. The MARICARMEM only changed her flag in 1977, not the livery neither the name. She probably ended her days smuggling tobacco into Spain.
4 - FUNCHALENSE (I) 1927–1952, SÃO SILVESTRE 1952-1954
Steel engine cargo ship built 1927. Official number: 897; Signal letters: HFUN. Shipowner: Empresa de Navegação Madeirense, Lda., Funchal. Gross tonnage: 382 tons; Net tonnage: 189 tons; Deadweight: 500 tons. Cargo capacity: 2 holds for 534 m3 of general cargo. Length overall: 45.55 m; Length B.P.: 43.42 m; Breadth: 7.05 m; Depth: 3.23 m; Draught (maximum): 3.95 m. Machinery: One 6-cylinders Deutz diesel engine developing 350 BHP, single screw. Speed: 6 knots. Crew: 9.
The first FUNCHALENSE was built in The Netherlands by Gebroeders Bos., at Groningen, for N.V. Vrachtvaart Mij. "Everhard" (R. Kramer, manager), Groningen, and completed on 12-07-1927 as EVERHARD. She did her acceptance trials on 12-07 and started her first voyage on the same day, sailing from Delfzil in ballast for Emden where she loaded the first cargo.
Purchased by Empresa de Navegação Madeirense, Lda., soon after. Registered in Funchal, Madeira Island, on 10-11-1927, to operate a regular service between Funchal and Lisbon, each crossing taking 4 days. On her delivery voyage from North Europe under command of captain João José Gomes, the FUNCHALENSE broke down off the Portuguese west coast and was assisted by the Norwegian cargo ship HELLEN who towed her to Lisbon , arriving on 11-11-1927. The FUNCHALENSE loaded general cargo for Funchal and oil products in barrels to the Azores. On her initial voyages the FUNCHALENSE carried cargo to Madeira and the Azores, but then settled on the Lisbon – Funchal service on a regular basis. 1-01-1934: original signal letters changed to CSKW. In 11-1938 the FUNCHALENSE broke her main engine crankshaft and became adrift without power, 30 miles NW of Porto Santo Island, on a voyage from Funchal to Lisbon loaded with bananas, with captain Marcos Fernandes Agualuza in command. As the necessary repairs could not be done at sea and since the FUNCHALENSE did not have a rádio installation, a lifeboat was lowered into the water with the chief officer and 5 sailors. The boat reached Porto Santo 10 hours later sailing and rowing in stormy weather, and a distress call was finally sent to Funchal. Meanwhile the FUNCHALENSE drifted dangerously towards the North coast of Porto Santo, an emergency rig being fitted in the mast with sails made out of the canvas hatch covers to avoid running aground. The FUNCHALENSE was rescued by the Madeira coastal steamer GAVIÃO on a position 10 miles to the East of Madeira and towed back to Funchal were the engine was repaired. During WW2 the FUNCHALENSE continued to operate the regular service to Madeira , but she also did several special voyages to Morocco and the Atlantic coasts of Portugal and Spain. On 24-04-1952 she entered Lisbon for the last time as FUNCHALENSE being renamed SÃO SILVESTRE while in port. On 28-04-1952 she sailed for Funchal (1-05) already under the new name, and continued to operate between Madeira and Mainland Portugal, with fleet mate MADEIRENSE. On 29-04-1953, following the delivery of the new FUNCHALENSE (II), the SÃO SILVESTRE was laid up in Lisbon awaiting sale.
Purchased on 7-06-1954 by Empresa de Navegação Frasil, Lda., Lisbon (Price paid: PTE 1,000,000$00). Registered in Lisbon on 6-08-1954 under the same name. Official number: H 429; Call sign: CSKW. She was used by Frasil on coastal voyages in Portugal and to Morocco. Registration cancelled on 11-09-1967 following sale on 4-07-1967 by order of the Court, executed by the firm "A Leiloeira", Lda., to José Maria da Silva and Emídio José Serrano Silva due to the bankruptcy of Frasil. Resold on 11-08-1967 to Componave – Companhia Portuguesa de Navegação, Lda., Lisbon. Price paid: PTE 1,000,000$00. Renamed MARICARMEM, operating the same Portugal to Morocco voyages. Registered in Lisbon on 6-09-1967 . Official number: I 361. By ministerial order of the Minister of Marine of 4-04-1968, the registration of the MARICARMEM was changed from short sea to international coastal voyages on 30-04-1968 . By ministerial order of the Minister of Marine of 16-11-1972 , registration changed again the following 24-11 from international coastal to short sea voyages. By ministerial order of the Minister of Marine of 30-07-1973, registration changed again on 25-09-1973 from short sea to international coastal voyages. On 5-05-1976 the Secretary of State for Merchant Marine authorized the sale of the MARICARMEM which occurred on 2-06-1977 . Purchased by Mr. Tito Lívio Silva Viegas dos Santos (Price paid: PTE 1,000,000$00), for resale and registered one final time in Lisbon (Official number: I 488). Previous Componave registry cancelled on 30-06-1977 . On 4-08-1977 resold in Lisbon to International Shipping Company Limited, with offices at 3 Library Ramp, Gibraltar and registered in Panama without change of name. Portuguese registry cancelled in Lisbon on 19-08-1977. The MARICARMEM was reported sunk in the Mediterranean off Cape de Gata in 12-1977.
