2004-11-17: Barbados, Nov 17 -- General cargo Lady Grace (478 gt, built 1969) was rumoured, a couple of days ago, to have been rescued by the Coastguard here and towed in. A local newspaper, today, reported that it had sunk and that the Coastguard had rescued all but one of the crew. According to the newspaper, the vessel was underway from Barbados to Carriacou, Grenada, last Friday (Nov 12), with a cargo of cement in bags, when it encountered some localised heavy weather and started listing, presumed from the cargo shifting. Lady Grace reportedly sank at approximately 1730, local time (2130 UTC) and the crew were reported to have been in the water for seven hours before they were found by the Barbados Coastguard. They had a liferaft, which was reported to have been launched, but apparently the painter broke and presumed drifted away before any crew could board it. -- Lloyd's Agents.
Barbados, Nov 18 -- General cargo Lady Grace sank in very deep water, hence prospects of salvage would be non-existent. -- Lloyd's Agents. (See issue of Nov 19.)
London, Nov 19 -- Following received from Coast Guard Barbados, timed 1930, UTC: General cargo Lady Grace had already succumbed to the deep, before the arrival of Coast Guard Barbados, and only its surviving crew could be rescued. The reported position of the sinking of Lady Grace, from the 406 beacon, which was relayed from GANSEC Puerto Rico, was lat 13 17.3N, long 60 52.2W. (See issue of Nov 22.)
