EAGLE TIRE -Freighter (Upper Keys - Monroe County) This 269 foot Dutch freighter now lies in 110 feet of water. Also known as the RAILA DAN. Built in Holland in 1962, this freighter was acquired and sunk by the Florida Keys Artificial Reef Association in 1985. She lies outside the reef on a flat sandy bottom six miles off Lower Matecumbe Key. The vessel is resting on her starboard side in 110 feet of water. Vessel has now broken in two due to a 1998 hurricane. Both parts now lie 100 feet apart. Sank in 19th December 1985. A freighter built in Werf-Gorinchem, Holland, in 1962 the Eagle was originally named the Raila Dan. She was 269' long with a 40' beam. She led an uneventful transport career, however, in 1985 a fire broke out aboard while en route from Miami to Venezuela, damaging the vessel beyond repair. Members of the Islamorada diving and tourism communities and the Eagle Tire Company arranged for the vessel to be prepared as a dive-ready artificial reef. Doors were removed and large holes were blasted in the hull. During the sinking, the wreck shifted and landed on its starboard side. During Hurricane Georges in September of 1998, the Eagle broke into 2 pieces. A distance of about 100 feet now separates the two halves which rest in 120' of water.
